What made this Goffstown roof replacement different?

Most of what makes a roof replacement go well is not visible in the finished photos — it is the preparation before the tear-off starts and the protection of the property throughout the job. This Goffstown project had a complicating factor: a backyard pool area that needed to be fully protected during the entire installation. That meant a more thorough setup before we touched the old roof, and more careful staging throughout, but it is exactly the kind of situation our crew plans for.

What were the shingles and color on this project?

The homeowner chose Owens Corning TruDefinition® Duration® shingles in Onyx Black. Onyx Black is one of the most striking options in the Owens Corning line — a true, deep black with dimensional texture that adds sharp contrast to a home’s profile. The Duration® product line is built around SureNail® Technology, which widens and strengthens the nailing zone for better wind resistance. For a Southern New Hampshire home that sees sustained winter winds, that is a real structural advantage.

How was the property protected during the tear-off?

Before our crew started stripping the old roof, we tarped and shielded the full property perimeter:

  • Landscaping on all sides of the house, including shrubs and plantings directly below the roofline
  • Driveway to protect the surface from shingle debris and nails dropping from the eave edges
  • Backyard pool area — this required the most attention, with complete coverage to prevent any roofing debris from entering the water or pool deck

Full tarping before tear-off is not optional on a responsible job — old shingles and nails fall from height and go farther than people expect. Protecting the site up front makes cleanup complete and keeps the property in the same condition it started.

What roofing system was installed under the shingles?

The full system from deck to surface:

  • Titanium PSU30 ice & water shield at the eaves, valleys, and around every penetration — a self-adhering secondary waterproof membrane in the locations most exposed to ice dams and wind-driven moisture
  • RhinoRoof U20 synthetic underlayment across the rest of the roof field — woven polypropylene that does not absorb water, tear easily, or buckle during installation the way old felt paper can
  • Ultimate Pipe Boots at every plumbing vent, designed to last the life of the shingle system without cracking or shrinking
  • Upgraded ridge venting to ensure proper attic airflow and ice dam prevention
  • Precision flashing at every transition, cut and lapped correctly to keep water out at the joints that tend to fail first on an aging roof

Why does the ridge venting upgrade matter?

Attic ventilation is the primary defense against ice dams on a New Hampshire home. The mechanics are straightforward: warm air trapped in an under-ventilated attic warms the roof deck, melts snow on the surface, and that meltwater runs to the cold eaves where it refreezes into ice dams. Those dams back water under the shingles and into the structure. A properly sized ridge vent, balanced with soffit intake, keeps the attic temperature close to the outdoor temperature — so the deck stays cold and the melt-refreeze cycle never starts.

Goffstown Asphalt Shingle Roofing — FAQs

What precautions were taken to protect the landscaping and pool?

Before the tear-off started, our crew fully tarped and shielded the landscaping, driveway, and the backyard pool area. On a roof replacement, old shingles and nails are falling from height — tarping the entire ground perimeter is the only way to ensure the property is protected and cleanup is complete.

What is synthetic underlayment and why use it over felt paper?

Synthetic underlayment like RhinoRoof U20 is a woven polypropylene product that does not absorb moisture, resist tearing, and stays flat during installation. Old felt paper absorbs water, wrinkles and buckles when wet, and tears much more easily. Synthetic is a straightforward upgrade on every replacement.

What is precision flashing and why does it matter?

Flashing is the metal installed at every transition on the roof — around chimneys, at walls, in valleys, and at penetrations. Properly cut and lapped flashing is what keeps water out at every joint. Most roof leaks on well-maintained roofs trace back to failing flashing, not failing shingles.
