What makes Duration shingles in Onyx Black a good choice for New Hampshire?

The Onyx Black color is a deep, true black that gives a home strong street presence — especially against lighter siding or painted wood trim common around Brentwood and Rockingham County. But the visual is secondary to the product itself. TruDefinition® Duration® shingles are built around Owens Corning’s SureNail® Technology, which uses a wide, woven-fabric reinforced nailing zone to achieve significantly better wind resistance than a standard shingle. What does a proper underlayment system look like?

The waterproofing layers under the shingles are what actually protect the structure of the home. On this Brentwood project, the system consisted of:

• Titanium PSU30 ice & water shield at the eaves (minimum 24 inches up from the roofline), in every valley, and around every penetration. This self-adhering membrane sticks directly to the deck and seals around nails, forming a redundant waterproof layer in the places ice dams and wind-driven rain are most dangerous.
• RhinoRoof U20 synthetic underlayment across the remainder of the field — far stronger, more tear-resistant, and more UV-stable than old felt paper. Synthetic underlayment does not absorb water or buckle the way felt can, which keeps the surface flat and consistent for shingle installation.

Why does the drip edge color matter?

Drip edge is the metal flashing that runs along the eaves and rakes (the sloped edges) of the roof. Its job is to direct water off the edge of the shingles cleanly into the gutter — and to protect the exposed edge of the fascia from wicking moisture. On this project we installed black drip edge to match the Onyx Black shingles. Most crews use whatever color drip edge is easiest to grab. Taking the extra step to match it eliminates the visual interruption at the roofline and makes the whole system read as a finished, deliberate design rather than an assembly of parts.

What happened during the tear-off and cleanup?

Before any new materials went on the roof, our crew stripped the existing system down to bare decking, cleared the site, and inspected every square foot of sheathing for soft spots, rot, or nail-pull damage. Any areas that needed repair were addressed before installation. After the new roof was complete, the site was fully cleaned — including magnetic sweeping for nails in the driveway and landscaping areas.
